Board & committees

Board of Trustees

The 12 members of the Board of Trustees include the four Officers of the Society (President, President-elect, Treasurer and Secretary). The President, President-elect and six Trustees are elected by the membership; three Trustees are appointed to add under-represented perspectives and/or specific expertise to the Board. The elected members are elected to 2-year terms of office by the membership during the AGM held during the International Headache Congress, automatically renewable for a second 2-year term. Any standard member of the Society may be nominated to join the Board of Trustees. Additional Trustees can be Co-opted by the Board to serve a 2-year term.

Standing Committees and Special Interest Groups

The Society's 21 Standing Committees and Special Interest Groups each have a specific role and advise the Board of Trustees on particular aspects of the business and/or functions of the Society. Each has a Chairman appointed by the Board of Trustees who must be a member of the Society. There are standing and ad-hoc Standing Committees. Both have prescribed areas of responsibility, standing committees remaining permanently in place with continuous activities or functions, ad-hoc being reconstituted from time to time to carry out particular initiatives. The Linguistic Special Interest Groups have more general responsibility for promoting the Society's objectives amongst those whose first language is not English. Advisory Council

The Advisory Council is comprised of the Chairmen of the Standing Committees and Special Interest Groups and the elected representatives of member National Societies. The Advisory Council meets annually to report their activities and give advice to the Board of Trustees. 

Task Forces

The Board of Trustees and Standing Committees can create Task Forces as required to undertake specific one-off time-limited activities.

    Lars Edvinsson is currently Professor and senior consultant at Lund University/Hospital in Internal Medicine, MD DMSci, and Chairman of the Swedish Migraine Society. He has served on the Board of the European Headache Federation until 2016.

    In 2008 Lars Edvinsson was called to be professor at the Copenhagen University in "Receptor Regulation in Cerebrovascular and Cardiovascular Diseases" and in 2007 was Founder, and is now Director, of the Glostrup Research Park, Copenhagen. In 2012 he received a Lifetime Achievement award from American Headache colleagues (Stowe, VT), and an Honoray Dr Hon Causa in Szeged, Hungary.

    He has a long history in studies of the cerebral circulation, innervation, receptors and function. In 1984 He was the first to describe CGRP in cranial vessels and the trigeminal ganglion, showed the release of CGRP in conjunction with migraine and cluster headache attacks, and has been instrumental in the development of novel CGRP receptor antagonists. His current work is centered at finding localisation of CGRP receptors in cranial structures and in CNS in order to illustrate the possible sites of action of novel CGRP acting drugs. The work involves also studies of other possible migraine candidates such as PACAP and 5-HT subtype receptor expressions as well as studies of their interactions and functional roles.

    Messoud Ashina is Professor of Neurology in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is also Director of the Human Migraine Research Unit at the Danish Headache Center and Department of Neurology, Rigshospitalet Glostrup.

    Professor Ashina has been actively involved in headache research since 1995. His research interests include experimental migraine and cluster headache models, functional neuroimaging, novel antimigraine drug targets, mechanism of migraine and action of antimigraine medications. He has authored over 400 papers, abstracts and book chapters on the topic of headache, including migraine.

    Stefan Evers received his MD in medicine and his PhD in musicology at the University of Münster, Germany. After training in general neurology including 1 year of research at the Institute of Neurology, London, he became consultant and Professor of Neurology at the Department of Neurology, University of Münster. In 2012 he became Head of the Neurological Hospital "Lindenbrunn".

    Stefan Evers was President of the German Migraine and Headache Society from 2003 to 2007 and Chair of the Headache Panel of the European Federation of Neurological Societies from 2003 to 2010. Since 2015 he is Chair of the Headache Panel of the European Academy of Neurology. Since 2011 he has been Honorary General Secretary of the IHS.

    He has published more than 220 scientific papers and several book chapters and books on headache and migraine, pain research, and general clinical neurology. Besides pain, special fields of interest are epilepsy, stroke, neuromanifestations of HIV infection, and the neurobiology of music.

    Wendy Thomas is past Chief Executive of The Migraine Trust, the health and medical research charity for migraine in the United Kingdom. She is also a director and chair of the Migraine Trust International Symposium  Ltd. (appointed by The Migraine Trust), 

    She is currently Treasurer of the British Association for the Study of Headache (BASH).

    Ms Thomas' interests have been in charity governance and in particular the importance of the control of financial aspects of the organisation concerned. She works to ensure that the finances of IHS are on a sound footing and stay that way, and aims to make the finances to be transparent and therefore easy for the non-financial mind to understand.

    David W Dodick, MD, FRCP (C), FACP, is Professor of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a consultant in neurology at the Mayo Clinic, in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is the Director of the Headache Program and the Sports Neurology and Concussion Program at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Dr Dodick is board certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). He also holds United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties certification in headache medicine and ABPN certification in vascular neurology.

    Dr Dodick has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and authored/edited 10 books. He is the Chair of the Sports Concussion Conference Workgroup and the AAN Annual Sports Concussion Conference of the American Academy of Neurology and a member of the AAN’s Annual Meeting Committee. He is a member of the scientific committee of the International Migraine Trust. He is Chair of the International Headache Academy. He is on the editorial board of several journals including Lancet Neurology, Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, Postgraduate Medicine, Headache, and Cephalalgia.

    Rigmor Højland Jensen is specialized in Neurology and professor in headache and neurological pain at The University of Copenhagen and the director of The Danish Headache Center, Glostrup Hospital. She is past-president of The European Headache Federation, director in Lifting The Global Burden of Headache.

    Fellowship at The Headache Clinic in Gentofte Hospital under supervision of Professor Jes Olesen, and received a doctoral degree from University of Copenhagen in 1999.
    Has conducted or otherwise been involved in numerous epidemiological, clinical, and neurophysiological studies of migraine and tension-type headache since 1988.
    Co-founder and now director of The Danish Headache Center, a multidisciplinary academic headache center, at Rigshospitalet-Glostrup, awarded as Global Excellence in Health in 2010 and 2014.
    Has published more than 300 scientific papers in peer-refereed journals, edited 2 textbooks and authored more than 50 chapters in text books.
    Present areas of research: Management of headache, CSF-physiology, Pain mechanisms and epidemiology, Medication overuse headache, Tension-Type Headache  and Cluster headache.
    Has been working extensively with national and international organisation of headache care, pre- and postgraduate education in headache since 1988.
    Has most recently initiated and directed an international  university degree in headache disorders, The Master in Headache Disorders at University of Copenhagen (www.mhd.ku.dk). The program started in 2016 and the first 18 candidates will graduate in June 2018.
    Aims to contribute to IHS with a detailed knowledge of global headache care and research, and an extensive international network. I also aim to expand the present IHS-activities within education and politics for an equal and better global access to headache care.

    Mario F P Peres, MD, PhD, FACP, is the Founder of the São Paulo Headache Center and Program Director of the Headache Medicine training for the Neurology Residency Program at Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. Senior Researcher and Professor of Postgraduation at Albert Einstein Hospital and at Psychiatry Institute, São Paulo State University Medical School. Born in São Paulo in 1971, had neurology residency training in 1998, PhD in Neurology in 2000 at Federal University of São Paulo, Headache Fellowship at Jefferson Headache Center, Thomas Jefferson University in 2000-2001.
     
    Dr Peres has authored and/or co-authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and a book to headache patients. He has been dedicated the past 15 years full time to the headache field, in clinical practice, academic training, public awareness and research. Developed a headache medicine E-learning program for health professionals, a headache diary app, and internet content with more than 10 million individual page views in the past years.

    He has been served as member of several committees at the Internation Headache Society and Brazilian Headache Society, currently part of the Ethics Committee, Cluster Headache Study Group, Headache Classification working group.

  • Patricia Pozo-Rosich (Spain)

    Patricia Pozo-Rosich, MD PhD, is a specialist in neurology, and is currently in charge of the Headache and Neurological Pain Clinical Unit at the University Hospital Vall d’Hebron, Barcelona, Spain, and the Headache Research Laboratory at the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR), which is a part of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. After winning the La Caixa and AHS awards, she became a Fellow in Basic Research, first with Professor Stephen Silberstein at the Thomas Jefferson University, PA, US, and subsequently, collaborated with Professor Peter Goadsby on research projects at both the University College London, UK, and the University of California San Francisco, CA, US.

    Dr Pozo-Rosich’s research focuses on improving the quality of life of patients suffering from headache by increasing our understanding of headache pathophysiology. In her role as a member of the International Headache Genetics Consortium, she has been involved in numerous projects on the genetics of migraine. She has received funding from the Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias (ISCIII), the La Marató de TV3 Foundation, the Migraine Research Foundation and la Caixa Foundation, to develop translational research projects. Her clinical research experience includes participating as a principal investigator in phase II, III and IV trials.

    She has directed PhD students and teaches residents, students, neurologists and other physicians. She is a professor in the Translational Research Master at the VHIR.

    She is a member of the International Headache Society, where she is a member of the Chronic Migraine Clinical Trials Guidelines Committee and the IHS Women’s Leadership Forum. She is also a member of the American Headache Society and the American Academy of Neurology. She is also Head of the Headache Study Group of the Spanish Neurological Society (www.gecsen.sen.es).

    She is the Editor for Headache in Revista de Neurologia, Associate Editor for Frontiers in Neurology – Headache Section- and the Journal of Headache and Pain. She has published 38 original papers, 16 review papers, 16 book chapters, edited 6 National Guidelines, authored a book and launched the website www.midolordecabeza.org for the Headache Spanish speaking community focused both on patients and physicians.

    Todd Schwedt, MD, MSCI is a Professor of Neurology and Chair of Neurology Research at the Mayo Clinic Arizona.  In addition to his clinical duties in the Mayo Headache Clinic, he leads an active headache research portfolio.  He is a principal investigator of the Neuroimaging of Headache Laboratory at Mayo Clinic, of the American Registry for Migraine Research (ARMR), the Medication Overuse Treatment Strategy Trial (MOTS), and he is the Medical Director of the Mayo Clinic Arizona Clinical Studies Unit. He was a recipient of the 2015 Harold G. Wolff Award from the American Headache Society, an award presented annually to a researcher who has most significantly contributed to the understanding of headache. Dr. Schwedt serves on the Board of Directors for the American Headache Society, is a member of the American Headache Society scientific meeting planning committee, is the chairperson of the post-traumatic headache working group for the International Classification of Headache Disorders, and is an associate editor for Cephalalgia, Headache, Headache Currents and Pain Medicine. Dr. Schwedt is a frequent lecturer and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications.

    Gisela Terwindt received her MSc in Biology and MD in Medicine at the University of Leiden, the Netherlands. Her PhD encompassed epidemiology and genetics of migraine, with the discovery of the first migraine gene. She is associate professor of Neurology, and Consultant Neurologist, at the Department of Neurology, Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), Netherlands, where she also runs the Headache Clinic.

    Gisela Terwindt is chair of the scientific committee of the Dutch Headache Society. She is member of the International Headache Classification Committee, the IHS Ethics Committee, and chair of the IHS Women’s Leadership Forum.

    She has published >150 scientific papers and several book chapters on headache and migraine.  She received a prestigious personal grant from the Dutch Organisation of Scientific Research (VIDI-award).

    Arne May is a Professor of Neurology in the Department of Systems Neuroscience at the University of Hamburg and head of the headache outpatient clinic and the facial outpatient clinic of the University clinic of Hamburg. His major research interests are the basic mechanisms of facial and headpain, the chronification of pain and plasticity within the human brain. The work of his group involves human imaging studies in primary headache as well as experimental studies of trigeminovascular nociception, with the aim of understanding how to modulate facial and headache syndromes and chronicity of pain. Prior to his position at the University of Hamburg, Professor May was a clinician and conducted research into pain and headache syndromes at the University of Regensburg. Prior to this he completed his residency in the Neurology Department of the University of Essen, followed by post-doctorate studies at the Institute of Neurology in London. Professor May is currently a member of the Board of trustees of the International Headache Society since 2013. He has published around 300 original and review articles with an h-index of 66 and is since 2016 the Editor of Cephalalgia.

    R Allan Purdy MD, FRCPC, is Professor of Medicine (Neurology) at Dalhousie University. He was Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine, and Chief of the Medicine Service of the Department of Medicine at Dalhousie and Capital Health from 2005 to June of 2011. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 2008. He previously was the Professor and Head of Neurology at Dalhousie from 1994 to 2006. He is a Fellow of the American Headache Society in 2010 and is the President of the American Headache Society.  

    Dr. Purdy is Past-President of the Canadian Headache Society. He is the Chair of the Education Committee of the International Headache Society and is on the Board of Directors of the both societies. He directs headache educational courses worldwide, and has received Excellence in Teaching Awards on many occasions. He has been involved in guideline develop for the treatment of migraine and is involved in clinical research in migraine and has several publications.

    He is co-editor of Advanced Therapy of Headache and co-author of Headache Pocket Clinician 2010 from Cambridge University Press. In 2005 he received the Arnold P. Friedman Distinguished Clinician Research Award from the American Headache Society for outstanding contribution to the field of headache, and the 2007 Life Time Achievement Award from the Headache Cooperative of New England. He has been on the Editorial Board of Cephalalgia and is currently an Associate Editor for Headache.

    Mark Braschinsky received his MD in medicine (in 2000), completed his residency in general neurology (in 2006) and his PhD in neurology (in 2010) at the Tartu University, Estonia. After training he became teaching neurologist and consultant at the Tartu University Clinics’ Department of Neurology, whereat he established a Headache Clinic in 2015. The same year he became a senior neurologist.

    Mark Braschinsky is founder and current president of Estonian Headache Society and board member of European Headache Federation. He is also a member of European Academy of Neurology’s Headache Scientific panel. His scientific work is related to clinical headache and pain research.

    Chin-Sang Chung has obtained his medical degree at the Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea in 1981. He trained in neurology residency at the Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, Korea. Afterwards he served as the neurology professor and chairman at the Chungnam National University College of Medicine, Daejeon, Korea. He obtained his PhD at the Seoul National University in 1989. Between 1992 and 1993 he did a research fellowship on stroke under the supervision of Dr. Louis R. Caplan, at the New England Medical Center of Tufts Medical School, Boston, MA, USA. In 1995 he moved to the Samsung Medical Center (SMC), Seoul, Korea as a neurology professor and also served as the department chair (2003-2009) and director of the Neuroscience Center (2009-2013). In addition to his major subspecialty of stroke, he established the first Headache Clinic in South Korea in 1995 and launched the Korean Headache Society (KHS) in 2001. And he served as the KHS president (2003-2007) and the vice-president of the Asian Headache Foundation (the president professor Fumihiko Sakai). Since October 2016, he has been the president of ARCH (Asian Regional Committee of Headache), which was originated from the Korean-Japanese Headache Congress that was launched by Chin-Sang Chung and Fumihiko Sakai in 2006. He is also the congress chairman of the Korean Stroke Society (KSS) after having served as the KSS president (2014-2016). He is actively involved in clinical researches on headache and stroke and has published 123 articles in SCI journals and wrote many book chapters on stroke and headache.

    Dr Bronwyn Jenkins, BMed FRACP, is a consultant neurologist in Sydney, Australia. She graduated from The University of Newcastle in 1995. Dr Jenkins did a fellowship in Stroke at Royal North Shore Hospital.

    Dr Jenkins was one of four delegates chosen to attend the International Headache Society Headache Master School in Tokyo, Japan in 2013. One of her primary aims is to organise a similar program for Australian, New Zealand and neighbouring Asian countries in 2018.

    Dr Jenkins is interested in teaching students, trainees and colleagues, particularly about headache. She continues to be involved in local advocacy for patients such as participating in consumer forums with Headache Australia.

    She is one of the founding members and Co-Secretary for the recently formed Australian and New Zealand Headache Society (ANZHS) which aims to improve management of headache patients in the Australian and New Zealand region. She is involved in the therapeutics and research subcommittees of ANZHS.

    Dr Jenkins is also a member of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists, International Headache Society and the International Association for the Study of Pain.

    Arne May is a Professor of Neurology in the Department of Systems Neuroscience at the University of Hamburg and head of the headache outpatient clinic and the facial outpatient clinic of the University clinic of Hamburg. His major research interests are the basic mechanisms of facial and headpain, the chronification of pain and plasticity within the human brain. The work of his group involves human imaging studies in primary headache as well as experimental studies of trigeminovascular nociception, with the aim of understanding how to modulate facial and headache syndromes and chronicity of pain. Prior to his position at the University of Hamburg, Professor May was a clinician and conducted research into pain and headache syndromes at the University of Regensburg. Prior to this he completed his residency in the Neurology Department of the University of Essen, followed by post-doctorate studies at the Institute of Neurology in London. Professor May is currently a member of the Board of trustees of the International Headache Society since 2013. He has published around 300 original and review articles with an h-index of 66 and is since 2016 the Editor of Cephalalgia.

    Ishaq Abu-Arafeh was born in Jerusalem and qualified in Medicine (MBBS) from the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan. He started his paediatric career in Bethlehem after junior internship in Jerusalem, Palestine. He moved to the UK and took higher specialist training in general paediatrics, neonatal intensive care and paediatric Neurology in Leeds, Cardiff, Sheffield and Aberdeen. As a research fellow to Professor George Russell, between 1991 and 1993, he established interest in headache and studied the epidemiology of headache and the periodic syndrome in Aberdeen schoolchildren, which was the subject of his postgraduate thesis for his MD from the University of Aberdeen.

    Dr Abu-Arafeh is a Fellow, a Trustee and a Council member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. He is also a Council member of the British Paediatric Neurology Association. He is a co-founder of the Scottish Paediatric Neurology Group and he was the honorary secretary of the Scottish Paediatric Society (2003-11).

    He took the post of a consultant in paediatrics and paediatric neurology at Forth Valley Royal Hospital and The Royal Hospital for Sick children in Glasgow, UK, in 1995 and continued his clinical and research interest in children's headache. He established the Headache Clinic at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow and it became one of the largest, if not the largest, headache service for children in the UK.

    Dr Abu-Arafeh contributed to patient support groups as a medical advisor for Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome Association- UK and the Migraine Action Association. He is a member of the British Association for the Study of Headache and was chairperson of its paediatric committee between 2007 and 2011. He has been a member of the International Headache Society for the past 20 years and presented his work at several IHS congresses, starting with wining the prize for the best poster presentation in 1993 in Paris. He contributed to the International Classification of Headache Disorders II and III and gave invited lectures at several IHCs, Migraine Trust and EHMTIC Symposia.

    Ishaq Abu-Arafeh plays an important role in raising awareness of childhood headache and medical education. He organised three Childhood Headache Symposia in the UK (London 2002 and 2006 and Glasgow 2008). He also took part in the development of the British Paediatric Neurology Association's Children Headache Teaching Course (CHaT -1), which has now become a well established course and has been run across many centres in the UK. He is the editor of 'Childhood Headache' which is now in its second edition.

    On taking the chairmanship of the Child and Adolescent Standing Committee, Dr Abu-Arafeh aims to reach out to all IHS members working with children in order to be inclusive and raise the profile of issues related to childhood headache within the IHS and beyond.

    Jes Olesen, MD, is Professor of Neurology at the University of Copenhagen and Co-director of the Danish Headache Centre in Glostrup, Denmark. He began his medical training at the University of Copenhagen in 1967 and undertook specialist education in neurology at major teaching hospitals in Copenhagen, the National Hospital, Queen Square, London, and Cornell Medical Center, New York. He completed his Danish thesis in 1974 and became a  Lecturer in Neurology at the University of Copenhagen in 1975. In 1985 he became Professor of Neurology at the university. He was Chairman of Neurology at the Gentofte Hospital from 1985-1993 and at Glostrup Hospital from 1993-2000. In 1999 he was a Visiting Professor at Harvard University, USA. In 2001 he founded the Danish Headache Center at Glostrup Hospital. He has been Chair of the Lundbeckfoundation Center for neurovascular signalling since 2006 and from 2009-2010 was a Visiting Professor at the University of California Los Angeles, USA.

    Jes Olesen was Associate Editor of Cephalalgia from 1980-1986 and Pain from 1986-1990. He has been on the Editorial Boards of Clinical Neuro­logy and Neurosurgery, Functional Neurology, Journal of Cerebrovascular Blood Flow and Metabolism, Acta Neurologica Scandinavica, Current Opinions in Neurology, European Neurology and the European Journal of Neurology.

    R Allan Purdy MD, FRCPC, is Professor of Medicine (Neurology) at Dalhousie University. He was Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine, and Chief of the Medicine Service of the Department of Medicine at Dalhousie and Capital Health from 2005 to June of 2011. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 2008. He previously was the Professor and Head of Neurology at Dalhousie from 1994 to 2006. He is a Fellow of the American Headache Society in 2010 and is the President of the American Headache Society.  

    Dr. Purdy is Past-President of the Canadian Headache Society.     Anna Andreou completed her PhD in Neurology at the Institute of Neurology-Queen Square, where she investigated the therapeutic potentials of novel glutamate channels in migraine treatment. She then moved to the University of California San Francisco, where she focused her research on the investigation of brain networks involved in migraine pathophysiology and the effectiveness of neurostimulation in headaches. Anna is now a headache research fellow at Imperial College London, funded by The Migraine Trust Fellowship.

    Since the completion of her PhD, Anna has received a number of awards including the Thomas E. Heftler Migraine Research Award by the American Headache Society and the Migraine Research Foundation, and the 2012 Early Research Career Grant by the International Association for the Study of Pain.     Dr Levin is Professor of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, where he directs the UCSF Headache Center and the Headache Medicine Fellowship.   He is actively involved in research and teaching activities at UCSF. 

    Prior to joining the UCSF Department of Neurology in 2014, Dr Levin was a long-time faculty member at Dartmouth Medical School and co-directed the Dartmouth Headache Center with his colleague Dr Thomas Ward.     Hans-Christoph Diener, MD, PhD is Professor of Neurology, Chairman of the Department of Neurology and Director of the Essen Headache Centre at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. He was President of the German Neurological Society, President of the European Headache Federation (EHF), and the International Headache Society and chairs the German Headache Consortium and the German Stroke Data Bank.

    Professor Diener received his medical degree and doctorate at the Albrecht-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg, and continued his training there in the Departments of Neurology, Psychiatry, Internal Medicine and Surgery. Prior to joining the University of Essen in 1989, he was an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Department of Neurology at the University of Tübingen. He was a visiting Professor at the Neurological Sciences Institute in Portland, Oregon in 1984 and 1985 and at the University of New South Wales in Sydney in 1987 and 1988.

    Professor Diener's special research interests focus on headache and stroke. He has investigated the mechanisms and management of medication-overuse headache, the prophylactic action of drugs in migraine, the relationship between plasma levels of prophylactic agents and their clinical efficacy, the role of visual evoked potentials in migraine, the mechanisms of action of migraine drugs, PET studies during migraine attacks, and animal models of migraine. Professor Diener performed major studies in the epidemiology of chronic headache supported by the German Ministry of Research and Education.

    Professor Diener has authored or co-authored 734 articles in peer reviewed journals (158 as first author, 13 in the NEJM), 241 invited reviews, and 306 book chapters, and served as the editor or author of 71 books. His h index is 77.     Shuu-Jiun Wang, MD, is Professor of Neurology and Chairman of Faculty of Medicine, National Yang-Ming University School of Medicine and Deputy Head of The Neurological Institute, Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan. He was the founding president of the Taiwan Headache Society from 2005 to 2011 and has been honorary president since 2011.

    He is a headache specialist and started the headache clinic in Taipei Veterans General Hospital after the fellowship training with Dr Stephen D Silberstein in the US from 1995 to 1996. He serves as an associate editor of the journals Cephalalgia, Headache and Journal of Headache and Pain and others. Dr Wang was awarded the Bruce S Schoenberg's international neuroepidemiology award by the American Academy of Neurology in Washington DC in 1994 and Seymour Solomon Lecture Award by the American Headache Society in LA in 2010. His main interest is on the research of epidemiology and social impact of headaches, quality of life of headache patients, on headaches associated with vascular lesions, cervicogenic headaches, chronic daily headaches, neurophysiology of pain and autonomic nervous system, and treatment (drug trials) of migraine, but for the last two decades, mainly on genetics of migraine. He has several publications in international (75) and national (161) scientific journals and books (11) and book chapters (14) and over 500 communications in international (193) and national meetings (352).

    Dr Pereira Monteiro is Past-Member of the International Board of Functional Neurology and Co-Editor of a supplement of Functional Neurology on The Acute treatment of Migraine Attack, Editor of a Portuguese book on headache, "As Cefaleias na Clínica Geral" 1st and 2nd edition. He is Founder Member of the Portuguese Headache Society and of the European Headache Federation (EHF), and a Past-Member of the Executive Committee, Public Relations, Research Committees and of the Cluster Club of the EHF and of the Ethics Committee and Public Relations Committee. He was also Founder and first President of the IHS Portuguese Linguistic Committee and past representative of the Portuguese Headache Society to IHS and the European Headache Federation. He is also a past member of the Cervicogenic Headache International Study Group, Task Force on Chronic Daily Headache and Serotonin Club, Past-President of the Portuguese Neurological Society, Past delegate of the Portuguese Neurological Society at the European Federation of Neurological Societies and World Federation of Neurology, and Past President of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Cefaleias. Dr Pereira Monteiro is an Effective Member of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Neurologia, Sociedade Portuguesa de Cefaleias,  American Academy of Neurology (AAN), World Federation of Neurology (WFN), Member of the Research Groups on epidemiology, infectious diseases and headaches of the AAN and on Autonomic Disorders and Headaches of the WFN.

    After his medical studies at the University of Düsseldorf, Tim Juergens specialised in clinical neurology at the Dept. of Neurology, University of Regensburg. He then joined Prof. Arne May's group at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf where he obtained his Habilitation and became a board-certified pain specialist. At present, he is consultant at the Dept. of Neurology, University Medical Center Rostock, Germany (Director: Prof. Dr. Alexander Storch) and head of the Headache Center North-East. Additionally, he is vice-president of the German Migraine and Headache Society, Visiting Editor at The Journal of Headache and Pain and Associate Editor at Frontiers of Neurology (Section Headache Medicine and Facial Pain). His research interests cover neurophysiology and pain, neuromodulation in headache and pain, trigeminal autonomic cephalgias, human models of pain and facial pain.

    Chin-Sang Chung has obtained his medical degree at the Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea in 1981. He trained in neurology residency at the Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, Korea. Afterwards he served as the neurology professor and chairman at the Chungnam National University College of Medicine, Daejeon, Korea. He obtained his PhD at the Seoul National University in 1989. Between 1992 and 1993 he did a research fellowship on stroke under the supervision of Dr. Louis R. Caplan, at the New England Medical Center of Tufts Medical School, Boston, MA, USA. In 1995 he moved to the Samsung Medical Center (SMC), Seoul, Korea as a neurology professor and also served as the department chair (2003-2009) and director of the Neuroscience Center (2009-2013). In addition to his major subspecialty of stroke, he established the first Headache Clinic in South Korea in 1995 and launched the Korean Headache Society (KHS) in 2001. And he served as the KHS president (2003-2007) and the vice-president of the Asian Headache Foundation (the president professor Fumihiko Sakai). Since October 2016, he has been the president of ARCH (Asian Regional Committee of Headache), which was originated from the Korean-Japanese Headache Congress that was launched by Chin-Sang Chung and Fumihiko Sakai in 2006. He is also the congress chairman of the Korean Stroke Society (KSS) after having served as the KSS president (2014-2016). He is actively involved in clinical researches on headache and stroke and has published 123 articles in SCI journals and wrote many book chapters on stroke and headache.

    Zaza Katsarava, MD, PhD, MSc, is a head of the department of neurology at the evangelic hospital in Unna and a Professor of Neurology at the University of Essen in Germany. He is General Secretary of the European Headache Federation, Chair of the Russian Linguistic Subcommitte of the International Headache Society and Co-chair of the Georgian National Headache Association.

    Dr Katsarava graduated from Medical University in Tbilisi, received training in neurology at the Medical Academy in Tbilisi and accomplished his PhD in the Institute of Physiology in Tbilisi in the Republic of Georgia. He trained further in neurology and psychiatry at the University of Essen in Germany, obtained degree of Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston and a certificate in quality assurance in medicine at the Johns Bloomberg Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, USA.
    Dr Katsarava's main interest focuses on headache and pain, especially the risk factors and mechanisms of chronic headache. He has used electrophysiological and imaging techniques to investigate the plasticity of the pain network in the development of chronic headache. He is a principal investigator on several of the large-scaled poplation based studies on predictors and risk factors of headache chronicity.    

    Dr Katsarava's interests relate to public health aspects of headache. He is working for international collaborations together with the WHO in raising awareness of the burdens attributable to headache in the countries of Eastern Europe and in improving access to headache-related healthcare in order to mitigate these burdens. He has published widely in refereed journals and elsewhere over 15 years.

    Guus Schoonman is working at the Neurology Department of the Leiden University Medical Centre. He obtained his MD in 2000 and his PhD in 2008 for the study of trigger factors in migraine.     Anders Hougaard, MD, PhD, is a medical doctor and post-doctoral researcher at the Danish Headache Center, Department of Neurology, Copenhagen University Hospital, Denmark.
    Anders has been active in clinical headache research since 2009 and completed his PhD in Neuroscience on the topic of advanced magnetic resonance imaging investigations in migraine with aura in 2014 under the supervision of professors Messoud Ashina and Jes Olesen.
    His current main research interests include the pathophysiology of migraine (in particular migraine aura), neuroimaging methods in headache (MRI, fMRI, SPECT, PET), and headache trigger factors.
    Anders has currently authored and/or co-authored 33 peer-reviewed publications and co-authored 2 books on headache topics. While continuing his career in clinical neurology, headache medicine, and headache research, Anders is a lecturer on headache pathophysiology in the Master of Headache Disorders programme at the University of Copenhagen.
