Professor James Waldo (Jim) Lance was born in Wollongong in 1926. He completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney in 1950 and began his clinical work as a resident medical officer at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (1950-51). In 1960 Professor Lance once again left Australia to follow his passion for research work at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He returned to Australia as the founder of the Department of Neurology in the newly established medical school at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He remained at UNSW throughout his professional career starting as senior lecturer (1961-63), then Associate Professor (1964-74), Professor of Neurology – Personal Chair (1975-92) and most recently as Emeritus Professor. Concurrent with his research, Professor Lance continued his clinical practice at the Prince Henry and Prince of Wales Hospitals where he was Chairman of the Department of Neurology (1961-92) and foundation Director of the Institute of Neurological Sciences (INS, 1990-91)
He was former President of the Australian Association of Neurologists and the International Headache Society (1987-1989), and in 2015 was awarded an IHS Special Recognition Award.

This weekend in New York members of the IHS-GPAC Steering and Core Committees held a strategy workshop to prepare for the global launch of the IHS Global Patient Advocacy Coalition (IHS-GPAC) to work on patient advocacy efforts for people with migraine and other headache disorders. This inspirational group representing 12 worldwide countries brainstormed over 2 days to initiate a pioneering mission. One member of the group said 'It is a great and huge honour to participate in this adventure which I am sure will end in amazing tools for patients and physicians, and the public to equalise all needs in headaches around the world'. Here are some workshops and symposia that may interest headache specialists like you:
- International Headache Society-IASP Joint Symposium on Recent Advances in Mechanisms and Management of Migraine. September 14. With the successful completion of phase III trials of CGRP antibodies for treating migraines, researchers and clinicians are on the cusp of one of the biggest advances in migraine treatment in 25 years. Hear firsthand about this progress.
- Integrated Orofacial and Head Pain Classification. September 17. This satellite symposium is organized by the IASP Special Interest Group on Orofacial and Head Pain. Orofacial pain is largely lacking a unifying classification that relates it to headache, a challenge being addressed in this third meeting devoted to finalizing the beta version of classification and sharing early data on field testing. The topic is closely related to IASP’s work with the WHO on ICD-11. Registration is required.
- One Nerve, Three Divisions, Two Professions and Nearly No Cross-Talk. September 14. Plenary address by Prof. Arne May, MD, PhD, who gives an overview of progress made in 20 years of chronic non-odontogenic facial pain treatments and a call to collaborative action among multidisciplinary specialists who appear to be at the brink of a new facial pain classification.
- Headache, Migraine, Orofacial Pain. September 12. This course for clinicians combines state-of-the-art diagnoses and updated treatments for the most common headache and facial pain syndromes.
- Central Pain Disorders. September 12. Focused on the central neuropathic pain in multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury, this topical workshop explores chronic pain in post-traumatic headache and central nervous system disorders.
Did you know? Past attendees rated the World Congress a 4.5 out of 5 for its high value. Here’s your chance to discuss important advances in anesthetics face to face with peers from 130 countries! Don't miss your chance to network with headache specialists in Boston this September.
